One of the few celebrities I’ve met in my day was River Phoenix. It was April 1991, he looked a hot mess, had bad skin, worse hair, was rude, and was, as it turned out, about 2-1/2 years from a very premature death by opiates. I’ve always felt bad for Joaquin “I used to be [...]

Deerhunter - Microcastle - 4.00/5.00
Best song: “Nothing Ever Happened”
Release date: October 28, 2008
Indie rock band Deerhunter’s upcoming 3rd album, Microcastle, is easily one of the best albums of the year, and possibly the last good indie album to look forward to in 2008.
Microcastle is still ambient and spacey like their 2007 album, Cryptograms, but this [...]

This is our first MegaSizzle guest writer, MM. He’s a young lad who loves his indie music, likes some drugs, and dislikes the fuzz. He will be contributing occasional pieces, most likely on indie music, but also probably some of his bizarrely funny musings.
If you want to be a guest writer on MegaSizzle or have [...]

For those of us alive and online in the late 1990s, there was this thing called Napster, which came after newsgroups but before torrent technology. One young lad, Shawn Fanning, created the file-sharing service in his dorm room and basically single-handedly shot the music industry all to sh*t. Congratulations! Anyway, with Napster at its height, [...]

Due to the Labor Day holiday, I sort of blanked on the fact it was Tuesday, so here’s some off the cuff rambling on a list I consider quite frequently, generally while on wedding dance floors.
Ten Songs That, If I Hear Them Again In This Lifetime, It Will Be Too Soon. And Yet I’m Guaranteed [...]

Who are going to be the “classic” rock bands of our generation?
I base my rankings mostly on what i would call “Quality Longevity” & Worldwide Popularity — Longevity being key, so great bands with only a couple of albums (such as Sublime & Nirvana) are excluded. Quality also key, so bands with only 1 or [...]
Wow, I remember the good times. They really liked Sun Chips and M&Ms.
Whatever happened to those guys anyway?

So the blogosphere is talking about the top-10song lists of the presumtive Presidential candidates. John McCain has not one, but two, ABBA songs on his list. And number-one (of all time?) is supposedly “Dancing Queen.”
Frank Sinatra (also on the list) I’d get. Bob Seger? Perhaps. Even the Stones. John Cougar Mellencamp could sneak the feck in. But [...]

RACONTEURS - CONSOLERS OF THE LONELY
The 2nd Album from White Stripes frontman Jack White’s “side project” takes a
huge step forwardfrom their first album. Brendan Benson takes on more of the
lead singer role on this album, Jack White joins in for a lot of mixed vocals
and does crazy guitar stuff as usual.
Basically, this disc is just plain sick and [...]
